Nongjian NJ Tao

Center Director and Professor, Biodesign Center for Bioelectronics and Biosensors

Nongjian “NJ” Tao, Ph.D., is the director of the Center for Bioelectronics and Biosensors at the Biodesign Institute and is a professor in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University. Tao joined ASU faculty as a professor of electrical engineering and an affiliated professor of chemistry and biochemistry in August 2001.

Specializing in the very small, Tao’s expertise lies in molecular electronics and nanoelectronics, chemical and biological sensors, and wireless devices for mobile health and environmental applications. Tao’s research center explores fundamental properties of single molecules and nanostructured materials, develops new sensing and detection technologies, and builds fully integrated devices for real-world applications.

Prior to joining ASU, Tao worked as an assistant and associate professor at Florida International University. He holds 10 patents, has published 200 refereed journal articles and book chapters, and has given more than 200 invited talks and seminars worldwide.
